1. Install VanguardFX
Overview
Download the installer once and it sets up everything for 3ds Max 2024, 2025, 2026, and 2027 in a single pass. Files go to C:\Program Files\VanguardFX\ and the startup script auto-registers the VanguardFX menu in Max.
Steps
- Download — grab
VanguardFX_Setup_v1.0.3.exefrom the homepage Download button, or from our Telegram channel @VanguardFX_Updates (pinned post). - Close the DSP app if open (the installer detects it and will block otherwise). 3ds Max itself can stay open — but a restart is cleaner.
- Right-click the
.exe→ Run as administrator. Accept the SmartScreen warning. - Read and accept the EULA. The installer auto-detects every installed Max version (2024 / 2025 / 2026 / 2027) and installs the matching Python build (3.10 / 3.11 / 3.13) for each.
- Click Install. Wait 60–90 seconds. Click Finish.
Verify install
Restart 3ds Max if it was open. Look at the very top of the Max window — you should see a new VanguardFX entry in the main menu bar, sitting alongside File / Edit / Tools / etc. If it's there, you're done.
license.lic is preserved across upgrades.2. Open the VanguardFX Menu
Overview
VanguardFX adds a top-level menu to 3ds Max. Every tool is one click away from there — no toolbar setup, no quad menus to configure.
Steps
- Launch 3ds Max (any supported version: 2024, 2025, 2026, or 2027).
- Look at the top menu bar (where File · Edit · Tools · Group · Views live). On the right side you should see VanguardFX.
- Click VanguardFX — a dropdown opens with six entries:
🎵 DSP — standalone audio analyzer
💡 LSP — Light controller (tyFlow)
🎨 MSP — Material/Geometry controller (tyFlow)
📁 TyFlow Samples — bundled examples

❓ Help & About - If the menu is missing: restart Max once (the menu registers on the first startup after install). Still missing? See the troubleshooting table at the end.
3. Launch DSP & Load Audio
Overview
DSP is the standalone audio engine. It opens in its own window, reads your audio file, and exposes the analysis data that LSP and MSP will consume back inside Max.
Steps
- From the VanguardFX menu, click 🎵 DSP. The DSP application opens in its own window, separate from Max.
- Inside DSP, click Load and pick your audio file. Two formats are supported:
•.wav— uncompressed audio, recommended for final renders
•.csv— pre-analyzed data exported from a previous DSP session - Once loaded, the waveform and analysis preview appear. Use the in-app controls to scrub through the track and verify your audio is detected correctly.
- Leave DSP running — it stays open in the background while you work in Max. LSP and MSP communicate with it live.
Audio format guide
| Format | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| .wav | Final renders | Lossless, highest accuracy analysis. |
| .csv | Reusable presets | Pre-computed analysis — instant load, identical results every time. |
EQ_Samples folder bundled with VanguardFX contains ready-made .csv files paired with .wav tracks — load one to test the workflow before bringing your own audio.4. Add LSP or MSP & Sync to tyFlow
Overview
LSP and MSP are the two tyFlow controllers. Pick the one that matches what you want the audio to drive — or use both side by side. The TyFlow Sync button is what wires them up to your existing tyFlow scene.
Which controller to pick
| Tool | Drives | Use when… |
|---|---|---|
| 💡 LSP | Light parameters | Lights pulsing with the beat, intensity changes, color modulation. |
| 🎨 MSP | Material & Geometry | Textures changing, vertex displacement, shape morphing, scale/position drive. |
Steps
- Make sure your scene already has a tyFlow object in it. (If not, add one — VanguardFX needs tyFlow Pro to drive anything.)
- From VanguardFX menu, click 💡 LSP or 🎨 MSP. The controller window opens inside Max.
- In the controller window, click TyFlow Sync. The plugin scans your scene for a tyFlow object and establishes the live connection.
- From here, the controller's UI lets you pick which DSP analysis bands drive which tyFlow parameters. Start small: link one band to one parameter, verify it animates, then layer more.
5. Preview & Render
Overview
Once LSP / MSP are synced, the audio drives your scene every frame. Preview in the Max viewport, then render with whichever engine you already use — VanguardFX doesn't lock you to a renderer.
Steps
- Set the scene frame range to match your audio length. At 30 fps, a 60-second track = 1800 frames; at 24 fps = 1440 frames.
- Press Play in the Max timeline (or scrub manually). Particles, lights, and materials should now react to the music.
- For the final output, render with your existing engine — VanguardFX is engine-agnostic:
• Arnold, V-Ray, Corona, Redshift, Scanline — all supported
• Chaos Vantage for realtime preview & rendering - Standard Max render workflow applies: Rendering → Render (or F10). VanguardFX runs in lockstep with every frame the renderer requests.
- Export audio separately (from your DAW or DSP's CSV companion
.wav), then mux video + audio in your editor.
6. Tips & Tricks
Best practices
- Start from a sample. Open VanguardFX → 📁 TyFlow Samples to find ready-to-use
.tyfxand.maxscenes paired with audio. Studying one of these is faster than building from scratch. - One controller, one job. LSP for lights, MSP for materials & geometry. Don't try to drive lights from MSP or geometry from LSP — they're optimized for different parameter sets.
- Keep DSP open. If you close the DSP app, LSP and MSP lose their audio source. Just minimize it instead.
- Save your analysis. Once you've dialed in an audio analysis you like, export the
.csv. Re-loading the CSV next session is instant and gives identical results. - Layer subtly. Bass for big motion, treble for fine detail. Driving everything from one band looks flat — mixing two or three bands reads more musically.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| VanguardFX menu missing | Startup script didn't run | Restart Max once. If still missing, verify install at C:\Program Files\VanguardFX\. |
| "DSP not found" when clicking 🎵 DSP | Install incomplete or files deleted | Re-run the installer. |
| TyFlow Sync says "tyFlow not found" | No tyFlow object in scene | Add a tyFlow object first, then click Sync again. |
| No reaction on playback | DSP closed or no audio loaded | Re-open DSP from the menu, load a .wav or .csv. |
| Crash on install | Previous DSP still running | Close DSP, retry. The installer's AppMutex blocks while it's open. |

🎵 DSP — Audio Engine
What it is
DSP is the standalone audio analyzer. It runs as its own Windows application, parallel to 3ds Max. Every audio-reactive thing in your scene is ultimately driven by data DSP produces.
Where it lives
Menu: VanguardFX → 🎵 DSP
Path: C:\Program Files\VanguardFX\
What it does
- Loads
.wavfiles (uncompressed audio) and.csvfiles (pre-computed analysis). - Performs frequency-band analysis on the loaded audio in real time.
- Exposes the analysis data to LSP and MSP inside 3ds Max — they read from DSP every frame.
When to use it
Always launch DSP first in your workflow — before adding LSP or MSP controllers. They need an active audio source to bind to.
💡 LSP — Light Controller
What it is
LSP (Light Script Plugin) is the controller that drives light parameters in a tyFlow scene from DSP's audio analysis. Use it when you want lights to react to music — intensity, color, position, on/off pulsing.
Where it lives
Menu: VanguardFX → 💡 LSP
Requires: tyFlow Pro installed and a tyFlow object in the current scene
Typical uses
- Stage lights pulsing with kick drum
- Color cycling driven by mid-range frequencies
- Strobe effects synced to high-frequency transients
- Light positions moving with bass envelope
How to use
Open the LSP window from the menu, then click TyFlow Sync to connect it to your scene. From there, the LSP UI lets you map DSP analysis bands to specific light parameters on your tyFlow object.
🎨 MSP — Material & Geometry Controller
What it is
MSP (Material/Geometry Script Plugin) is the controller that drives material and geometry parameters in a tyFlow scene. While LSP handles lights, MSP handles everything else visual — textures, shaders, vertex positions, shape morphing, scale, rotation.
Where it lives
Menu: VanguardFX → 🎨 MSP
Requires: tyFlow Pro installed and a tyFlow object in the current scene
Typical uses
- Particle scale pulsing with bass
- Material color changing per frequency band
- Vertex displacement driven by full spectrum
- Geometry morphing on beat detection
- Texture parameters (roughness, emission, opacity) reacting to audio
How to use
Open the MSP window from the menu, then click TyFlow Sync to connect it to your scene. From there, map DSP analysis bands to the tyFlow operators you want to drive (Position, Scale, Material, Mesh, etc.).
📁 TyFlow Samples
What it is
A folder of ready-made example scenes, templates, presets, and matched audio — packaged with the installer. The fastest way to see VanguardFX in action.
Where it lives
Menu: VanguardFX → 📁 TyFlow Samples (opens the folder in Windows Explorer)
Path: C:\Program Files\VanguardFX\EQ_Samples\
What's inside
- .max — complete 3ds Max scene files with LSP / MSP already configured
- .tyfx — tyFlow flow exports you can import into your own scenes
- .csv — pre-computed audio analysis you can load directly into DSP
- .wav — matched audio for each sample scene
- presets — saved controller configurations
.max samples, scrub the timeline, and reverse-engineer the bindings. Faster than reading any tutorial.🔐 License Status
